Characteristics

Location

Going along the A-2 towards Igualada, once past the village of el Bruc and just before reaching the hotel of the same name, the turn-off to Can Massana and Montserrat (B-111) appears, and shortly after entering it, on the left, is the access to the old coll del Bruc road (N-IIa). Follow it until just before km. 572, where on the right we find the access to the Montserrat Park residential area and just opposite, on the left of the road, a track starts which, in a little over 5 minutes, brings us to the rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

Grand rock shelter 120 metres long, 34 metres deep and 15 metres high, opened at the foot of a crag enclosed in a torrent, which at this point becomes quite wild. An exuberant vegetation of trees and lianas situated outside disguises, to a certain extent, the great elongated mouth of the rock shelter, giving it a shady and damp appearance, increased by the presence of the little stream that flows through it. According to the topographic data it is calculated that the total sheltered surface is 3150 square metres. The rock shelter is excavated at the base of a compact stratum of marly limestone from the eocene, which rests on a softer marly level. The torrent, after overcoming the crag by means of a waterfall, has been undermining its base, at the contact with the underlying marls, being responsible for the formation of the rock shelter.

Speleothems

From the back of the rock shelter water springs from a small hole, having originated a tufa stone concretion around it.

Hydrology

It is traversed by the stream that formed it. From the back of the rock shelter water springs from a small hole; the spring is beautiful and abundant, although it can run dry in times of drought. Formerly, this spring (Font de Can Solà) fed a large reservoir to irrigate the cultivation terraces that extended below the old road to Igualada.

Other details

Inside the rock shelter there is an enclosure formed by three walls, where in other times they would keep the flock.

History

Known since time immemorial. Mentioned by Faura i Sans in his Recull (1909). Little known by speleologists, but not by climbers, who have opened different routes on the roof of the rock shelter. Also, and for many years, it has been a meeting point for hikers and even some concert has been held there.
