Characteristics

Location

By the N-420 road in the direction of Reus to Falset, once past the Pradell de la Teixeta exit, between kms 849 and 848 you must turn right onto a track that must be followed for 1.5 km, parking at the point where a fairly abandoned track branches off to the left; at 150 metres we will find a small hut, we will continue about 45 metres where we will find a cairn (ETRS89 X:320359 - Y:4558142), from here another faint path branches off which we will follow, finding the occasional cairn up to the mouth of the cavity.

Description

Morphology

The mouth, open at the foot of a rocky step, gives way to a gallery that connects at its base, between blocks, with a lower chamber whose floor lies at -8 metres from the outside, from which a descending gallery of more than 40 metres emerges, almost totally occupied by blocks, which at some points reach a regular size and even seem to close it off. At the end of the aforementioned gallery a vertical step of -4 metres must be overcome, to find ourselves at its bottom in a hall from which two short side branches emerge and the main gallery, of about 40 metres, which descends slightly, also between blocks until at its terminal part they come to form an upper false floor.

Progression

For the exploration of the cavity it is advisable to carry 3 ropes of 8-10 metres and three long slings to install on naturals, in order to be able to overcome the three steps of 4-5 metres; there is an installed 'spit' that is not usable.

History

Cavity known in the area since time immemorial; the first partial exploration of which we have news was carried out on 30 June 1917 by some youths of the Agrupació Excursionista de Reus, among whom were Salvador Vilaseca Anguera as well as Joan Ferraté Gili and Francesc Cassador, the latter the owner of the land where the cavity is located and known in Pradell by the nickname 'Rabassó'.

Joan Ferraté together with members of the AE de Reus returned again on 8 July 1917, who explored and surveyed the entire cavity, assigning it a somewhat exaggerated depth of -60 metres, at the same time renaming it Avenc de la Pòpia.

In the summer of 1926 Salvador Vilaseca returned again to carry out archaeological excavations, with positive results, since the visit carried out in 1917 had been negative in this regard.

In November 1951 it was visited by the GES del CMB, who cite it under the name Avenc del Jardí del Rabassó. It happens that the estate next to where the cavity is located is known by the name 'Jardí del Maco'....
