Characteristics

Location

Going up the road that leads from Roquetes to the highest part of the El Port massif (Caro, Mola de Catí, el Mascar, …) and once past the characteristic bends known as el Cargol, you reach the Pas de la Barcina and a little further on, to the left, a turn-off leads to the TV repeater installations located at the summit of mont Caro. Shortly before reaching this point, the cavity lies some 50 metres below the road. Approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

Access is through an opening about 5 metres long and between 1 and 1.5 metres wide, giving way to a 30 metre shaft at the bottom of which there is a wide ledge covered by blocks and tree trunks thrown inside (1974). From the lower part of this level, descent continues down another shaft, narrower and with a ledge at approximately its midpoint. This second vertical drop, 36 metres deep, places us practically at the bottom of the pit, which is reached at the SW end of this level at the -68.5 metre level. The entire cavity is developed within a NE-SW trending joint.

History

Around 1960, members of the SES – CE Puigmal (Barcelona), accompanied on many trips by Mr. Cohí, a well-known excursionist from Tortosa of the time, carried out a series of campaigns in the area of Caro and Mola de Catí, exploring this cavity for the first time, although no bibliographic record remained and the only data were taken from the unpublished archive of Emili Sabaté. The cavity was made known later following the campaigns carried out by the SIE-CEA during the first half of the 1970s.
