Characteristics

Location

Just on entering Tivenys, along the T-301 road from Tortosa, we must turn right, beside some farm buildings; before crossing the Tanaro bridge we will turn left along the Camí del Perelló; after covering 1.26 Qm from the road we will turn left along the camí de la Plana del Roig; after having covered 1.8 Qm from the road we will turn left; at 3.8 Qm we will pass the Mas del Florentí, which is on our right, and we will follow the camí de Petxines until passing the Mas de Batista, in the area of l'Albardassa, having covered 5.3 Qm from the road, where the car must be left beside a small field hut; the track is almost entirely asphalted. From the back of the hut a marked path sets off on a gentle climb which we will follow for 400 metres; at this point we will find a cairn on the left from which a faint path sets off that in 28 metres takes us down to the cavity.

Description

Morphology

Access is via a pit of -17 metres, which from 8 metres becomes quite wide until reaching the base of the pit, where we find a broad chamber with a sloping floor. At the base of the chamber, on the N side, we find a pit of -7 metres that leads to the lower galleries, but these can be accessed without equipment from the lower part of the chamber. At the end of the slope and in a S direction the floor rises and gives access to a chamber with a not very high ceiling. Situated again at the lower part of the chamber, on the W side one can descend without equipment through some conduits that place us at the base of the -7 metre pit coming from the upper chamber. From here a conduit continues which at some point is quite narrow; along the route we find a couple of quite narrow small pits which we have not been able to access and which would be the points of maximum depth of the cavity, -27.6 metres.

Speleothems

In the chamber with a not very high ceiling, in a S direction, we find some beautiful formations.

Progression

The route is 84 metres.

History

During the multiple campaigns that the GIE of the Club Excursionista de Gràcia carried out in the Serra de Cardó during the 1960s and 1970s, they were informed in Tivenys of the existence, among others, of this pit, which they explored in July 1971. Rediscovered by members of the Espeleo Club Tortosa in 2011, finding inside it evidence of a previous exploration carried out in February 1971 by members of the group Joves Espeleòlegs Tortosins (the initial nucleus of what would later be the SIRE – Tortosa and later, the Espeleo Club Tortosa itself). In March 2024 Juli Serrano and Francesc Rubinat carried out the only known survey of the cavity to incorporate it into Espeleoíndex.
