Avenc d'en Basques

Avenc de 31 m. de desnivell a Cabacés (Montsant)

Cabacés • Priorat53m31m

A 31 m deep pit in Cabacés (Montsant), with an entrance of 0.6 x 0.4 m, a 12 x 8 m chamber and a ramp that forks. A cavity known since ancient times and explored by various speleological groups.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of la Figuera following the T-730 road in a westerly direction, after 1.5 kilometres and on the right, the track that climbs to the ermita de Sant Pau begins. Following it for about 200 metres there is a turn-off to the right that skirts a field; once past these, on the left a faintly marked path starts and following it we will find another path on the left that leads to the entrance of the cavity. The dense vegetation of the forest makes locating the pit difficult.

Approximate coordinates and a location of low precision.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, of reduced dimensions (0.6 x 0.4 m) gives access, by means of a small one-and-a-half-metre drop, to a chamber of 12 x 8 metres. In this chamber a ramp begins that forks at 4 metres. Following the right-hand gallery we reach, after descending 3 metres, a small pit that communicates through an impenetrable crawlway with the lower gallery. Following the left-hand gallery, with a steep gradient, we reach the top of a 3-metre drop, behind which the gallery continues descending, also with a steep gradient and among blocks, to arrive thus at the final chamber of the cave, after overcoming a small drop. In this chamber and halfway along the ramp a small gallery of about 10 metres opens up among blocks that returns once again to the chamber.

Vertical extent: 31 m (-29; +2).

The cavity is developed in a main joint of SW-NE direction opened, according to the ICGC map, in the Triassic limestone.

History

Cavity known since remote times by the people of the village who had descended as far as the first small chamber. The first speleological visits were made around the beginning of the 1960's decade by members of the SAS – CGB (survey), of the ERE – CEC, of the SIRE - UEC and perhaps some more, without being able to specify the dates.

Later, 1975, people from the SIEP – CE Poblet (survey) visit it and a little later from the EC Gràcia, who also survey it, all thinking that it is an unpublished cavity and baptise it as Cova de les Obagues. All of them place it in the municipality of la Figuera, but in reality it is in that of Cabacés.

We accompany the three surveys (in original version) that we know of and one will be able to verify that each one makes their own interpretations when representing it and it may even seem that it is a question of three different cavities.

Nor is the name too clear: Basques, Bascas, Vascas. Perhaps it is dedicated to someone called Vázquez ?? Or perhaps to someone who had basques??
