Descrizione
Morfologia
The cave mouth is of large dimensions, 30 metres wide by some 15 high, forming a gallery about 45 metres long, partly occupied by blocks of considerable size, rising in the first stretch and descending again in the final part. Along much of its course it keeps the dimensions of the entrance, the height gradually decreasing. Below the highest part of the gallery a lower concavity is formed, about 15 metres long by some 10 wide, entered by a steep slope. As in other cavities of the Port massif, its walls are largely blackened.
Storia
Cavity known since time immemorial. In the early years of the 20th century Neolithic remains were already found, and over time various archaeological interventions of interest have been carried out.
Mentioned in all the old speleological catalogues, it is, together with Cova Cambra, one of the most popular cavities of the Port.
Lluís Porta i Massana, in his article, explains that during the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries a good part of the inhabitants of Mas de Barberans took refuge there, each family making itself a kind of dwelling with boxwood branches.
He also explains that around 1828 a band of 14 bandits, called “els Glebes”, lived for quite some time inside the lower chamber of the cave, even when shepherds and flocks slept in the cova gran. They appear to have been the authors of some twenty murders with robbery on the way out of Tortosa. Seven of them could be arrested; they died hanged in Tortosa on 29 January 1829.
Bayerri, in his Historia de Tortosa y su comarca (1934), comments that the name of the cave originates from the mineral crystallisations said to be found there.
