Caratteristiche

Località

Leaving Mas de Barberans towards la Sénia along the TV-3421 road, after about 3 kilometres (shortly before the km. 12 marker) the forest track branches off to the right, climbing up the barranc de la Galera to the Casetes Velles – Refugi del Mas del Frare (halfway along, the municipality and the comarca change).

Once past the turn-off leading to the Cova del Vidre, the track climbs steadily westwards towards the refugi del Mas del Frare. About 300 metres before reaching the Coll de l'Assucar and about 30 metres above the track lies the cavity.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance consists of a wide gallery full of blocks with a gentle slope, which becomes markedly steeper in the last stretch, where the passage loses width. This opens laterally into a wide chamber about 35 metres long by about 8 wide, with a height varying between 2 and 4 metres. The floor of this hall is inclined and largely covered by gours and crossed by a small watercourse that emerges from the upper part and seeps away through a small sinkhole at the point of greatest drop in the cave.

In the upper sector of this chamber, after overcoming a small step, a narrow passage connects with another chamber of the same style as the previous one, about 18 metres long by about 10 wide, its floor also full of small gours.

Concrezioni

The floor of the first chamber is largely covered by gours. The second chamber also has a floor full of small gours.

Idrologia

A small watercourse emerges from the upper part of the first chamber and seeps away through a small sinkhole at the point of greatest drop in the cave.

Storia

The first information we have about this cave was provided by Lluís Porta i Massana who, with various companions from the CEC and from the comarca, spent some days in August 1934 visiting different places and cavities of the Montsià and the Port. They visited the cova de la Solana specifically on 14 August 1934, producing a fairly accurate sketch.

In June 1984, members of the ERE of the CEC visited it and made a new survey. We know that the cavity is well known and visited by the companions of the EC Tortosa.
