Descrizione

Morfologia

It is a worked rock shelter adapted as a hermitage. It has an almost square floor plan, about 9 metres deep by 10 metres wide. The interior is divided into several rooms.

Progressione

The hermitage remains closed, but on the SW side there is an open access space with windows that allow the interior to be observed, except for the deepest part of the cave, which remains in darkness; for this reason the sketch accompanying this record is approximate in this part, since it was necessary to rely on the reading of the distance meter.

Storia

Known as Bellpuig el Vell, it was the precursor of the current monastery of les Avellanes. In 1158 religious figures were already installed in the cave; the founding act dates from 1166.

It is also probable that before the arrival of Joan d’Organyà the cave was already a place of pagan worship and that the community's decision to settle there was not taken at random. In fact, the monastery was consecrated to the Mother of God, a usual procedure of the time (12th century), especially in places where there was evidence of cults of a local character. Although in the case of Bellpuig el Vell, the one who ended up being venerated was not the Virgin, but its founder Joan d’Organyà.
