Caratteristiche

Località

On the C-12 road from Balaguer to Àger, just past kilometre 176, we will turn right onto a track that after 655 metres leads to another track that also comes from the road; we will follow it to the right for 130 metres where we will find a crossroads, we will continue along the left-hand track for 90 metres and turn left onto a track that we will follow for 440 metres until we reach the height of a concrete electricity transmission tower that is on the right of the track; the next electricity tower is on the left of the track.

From the electricity tower, the cavity is 36 metres away and 12 metres up and is located among a group of holm oaks.

Note: Shortly after the start of the last stretch of track there is a barrier that is usually always open.

Following the track 260 metres further after the indicated electricity tower, we find a small building with a transformer where the power line ends; at this point there is a large space to park.

Altri dettagli

Note: In an attempt to explore the cavity during June 2024, it was observed that an animal has made its den inside; we think it is a Genet (Genetta genetta), since the large quantity of excrement in the middle of the entrance crawl and its characteristics seem to be from this animal; likewise, at the entrance there is an unbearable smell, so it is recommended to bring a good mask.

Storia

The first exploration took place on 31 March 1971 by members of the RES - CE Pirenaic (Barcelona), who named it Silles d'en Planes, making a brief description and publishing a very poor sketch that gives it 30 metres of depth.

We do not believe that the word "celler" can be a toponym equivalent to cave or pit.

We update the record (April 2016) by including a survey, unpublished until now, that members of the GREB de Balaguer made in May 1979 and who made a record of the cavity that has now appeared in the archive of our friend Oleguer Escolà and has been sent to us. According to it, members of the GREB de Balaguer had already explored the cavity in the same year 1971, shortly after those of the RES – CE Pirenaic.

The people of Balaguer catalogue it as Celler d'en Bixeller and give as synonyms Celler d'en Blanes, Celler d'en Planes and Avenc de Sant Tomàs (not to be confused with the nearby Forat de Sant Tomàs.
