Località

It is located in the Mont-roig range, in the municipality of Les Avellanes i Santa Linya. To get there, go to the village of Vilanova de la Sal and continue toward the railway halt; at 275 metres turn right and follow the main track for 1.2 kilometres to a junction where you turn right in a 180º turn, continue toward the ermita de Montalegre, cover another 3 kilometres until reaching the junction that leads to the ermita, and follow the right-hand track, in fairly poor condition, toward the coll de Porta. Once at the coll, leave the vehicle, as the continuation along the track is closed.

Descrizione

Morfologia

Semicircular entrance with a gallery that narrows after a few metres, giving way to a circular passage; once past this we find a small passage on the left of no interest, continuing along a gallery similar to that of the entrance although with a lower ceiling. A narrow passage places us in a new gallery that to the left meets a series of joints that cut perpendicularly across the gallery. To the right we continue along a passage at the end of which we find a narrow passage 1.5 metres above the floor that places us in a chamber with abundant lithogenic formation; to the left continues a narrow, long passage that ends in a circular chamber with a low ceiling. Situated in the previous chamber, to the right we find another low-ceilinged chamber with a gour that occupies a large part of it; both chambers are in reality a single one, but they have been separated due to the great profusion of columns and stalagmitic flows. Through a narrow passage one can reach a final chamber of similar characteristics but with an even lower ceiling.

Concrezioni

The chamber with abundant lithogenic formation contains stalactites and a gour that occupies a large part of the low-ceilinged chamber. The two chambers have been separated by the great profusion of columns and stalagmitic flows.

Progressione

From the coll de Porta we continue on foot along the track; this first descends and gradually turns right, from this point the cave entrance is already visible, the track continues more or less level and crosses four torrents. After passing the last of these and having covered 2.13 kilometres from the coll de Porta, which takes about 30 minutes, the track turns 90º to the right, where we will see a cairn indicating that we must leave the track to go to the left; we continue more or less along the ridge on which we are situated in the direction of the reservoir, but without descending at any point toward the ravine. Once we begin to reach the edge of the cliffs, we will have to descend from the cliff on our left where we will find the cave. The route from the coll de Porta takes about 45 minutes.

Storia

Known since ancient times, it is already cited by Lluís Marià Vidal in 1894. It is also known as cova del Pastor because a shepherd was found murdered inside the cave.
