Salt is an extremely soluble evaporitic rock. It forms one of the fastest karsts that exist, such as the Cardona salt diapir, with caves that change from one year to the next. The Cova del Riu has formed through the collapse of the floor of a mining gallery called Minilla, and includes a large chamber and a lower gallery that ends at the salt-sandstone contact.
