Characteristics

Location

In the municipality of Monistrol de Montserrat. Leaving the well-known Paella bend, located shortly before reaching the font dels Monjos, on the road from Monistrol to the monastery, one must descend the ridge where the road turns, initially along its right-hand slope, until finding a path that descends gently towards a rocky esplanade, where this path changes slope. We will leave it by taking the ridge line; after advancing about twenty metres, we must pay attention to a tiny hollow that hides on our left a few metres from the centre of the ridge.

Description

Morphology

The hidden entrance, rounded in shape, surrounded by vegetation and in the form of a small shaft, brings us towards a short ramp on our stomachs. The right-hand side forms an overwhelmingly perfect right angle, while the opposite side, of more continuous form, joins with the eastern end of the opposite side. The ceiling descends slightly towards the eastern end; the floor, however, does so suddenly by means of a large stone of clearly mechanical origin that causes a vertical step, although on both sides of the same stone one can descend by rather steep ramps, leading us to the maximum depth of the cavity at – 7 metres. On the southern side of the chamber, where the right angle widens, we can observe, on the sides of the walls that form the corner, the socket formed by the large block that has come away from the ceiling, leaving a space between the walls of the chamber and the large detached stone.

History

Quite well known for many years. The first exploration of which we have record is by the GES – CMB in October 1956.
