Montserrat pit 59 m deep in el Bruc, the third deepest pit on the mountain of Montserrat.

Characteristics

Location

By the road from Can Maçana to the monastery (via Santa Cecília), you must go as far as El Miracle and here (by the so-called drecera del Miracle) climb up to coll de Port (or de Porc). In front we have the roca de l'Enclusa (or el Bacallà) and on the left the path that goes towards the pas del Príncep. You must follow the path that goes westwards (towards els Frares Encantats) and go up a gully equipped with metal bars. At the top of it we find ourselves at the “cua” of the Bacallà and a path towards the S follows the west wall of the roca de l'Enclusa until reaching the pit.

Description

Morphology

Funnel-shaped entrance 1.2 x 1.5 metres. The entrance shaft (P.36) has a ledge at -13, the point where the joint reaches its maximum length, the width never exceeds little more than one metre. At the bottom of the shaft, a narrow passage and a short slope of stones connect with the entrance of the second shaft, 23 metres deep and of wider dimensions, reaching at its bottom the point of maximum drop. The cavity is structured on a N-S joint.

Speleothems

Some lithogenic forms of the parietal type are observed at the entrance and in the final section of the second shaft.

History

It was certainly a cavity known to climbers and to the monks of the monastery for many years, but the oldest exploration of which we have record is the one carried out by members of the GES-CMB in October 1956. Over the years it has been relatively little frequented, despite being the third deepest pit on the mountain of Montserrat.
