Characteristics

Location

We will leave Mont-roig del Camp along the Colldejou road (T-322). On reaching km 11 there is a bridge over the barranc de Rifà. The cave is at the foot of the bridge. We can leave the car 70 metres beyond the bridge, on the left of the road, from where a path descends to the barranc. We will go up the barranc and just past the bridge we will find the cave on our right. It is only a few metres from the municipal boundary between Vilanova d'Escornalbou and Colldejou.

Description

Morphology

It is a worked shelter 31 metres wide. We can distinguish three sectors: the lower part, next to the bridge, 5 metres deep; the right-hand wall is natural and the back wall is a dry-stone wall 9 metres long. The entrance to the central sector is through a passage between dry-stone walls; the one on the right is the one we mentioned earlier and the one on the left is a partially demolished wall. This central part is the darkest and has a depth of 5 metres. The third part, the upper one, is 13 metres wide and 4 metres maximum height, with the floor covered in large blocks.

History

Known since time immemorial. Archaeologically excavated by Salvador Vilaseca.
