Characteristics

Location

It is located to the north-east of Cambrils and to the south-west of the tossal de Cambrils. To get there we will set out from the hamlet of Cambrils along the L-4241 road in the direction of Alinyà. Once past the coll de Boix, on the right, we will go up along the forest track that leads to the prats de Cambrils. After covering 1,850 metres, at a very sharp left-hand bend on the stretch of track that is asphalted, directly below on the right, we will see the Espluga, which stands out against the landscape of grassy meadows, in the middle of the slope. We can go down to it on foot along a wide path that loops round to that very spot.

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter is 5 metres deep and about 60 metres wide at its opening. The walls are high and elongated, in the shape of a crescent moon. It faces south, very well protected from the north wind.

Speleothems

There are several lithogenic formations hanging down attached to the wall, like small pennants.

Hydrology

In the middle, when it rains, the water from the gully that has collected the rainwater leaps down.

Other details

It is still used today to pen livestock; a little apart there is the dry-stone hut with a wooden roof. In front of it there are small cultivated meadows that descend gradually in terraces, nowadays abandoned. There is still, parked, an animal-drawn cart and, in the middle of it all, there are several cherry trees, which in summer provide very pleasant shade.

History

The only reference data we have are those provided by Salvador Codina, who surveyed it in April 2010 and published it in 2014.
