Characteristics

Location

Located beneath the southern cliffs of the Tossal de Cambrils, in Odèn, in some gullies cut into the headwaters of the tributary torrents of Ensoles.

To reach it, you must leave the village of Cambrils, in the direction of Alinyà, but after a few metres, once past the boundary of the comarca of Solsonès, we will go up, on the right, along the forest track that leads to the wonderful meadows of Cambrils. Before reaching the collada de les Bases, we will turn off onto a track on the right that will skirt, along the sunny side, the cultivated fields without losing much elevation, in an easterly direction.

About a kilometre from the junction, we will find a small path, on the right, in poorer condition, that will descend below the crops, making a large loop to gain elevation.

To get here, to this point, we can also walk up, along the new Tossal de Cambrils route, very well waymarked, which starts from the restaurant “cal Agustí”, passing by the magnificent balma de Cordes, a spot that will leave us spellbound, and we will reach the aforementioned path in about an hour. Along this route, moreover, we will be able to enjoy the unbeatable views over Cambrils and its surroundings.

From this point and with no marked path, we will go in a southerly direction among box, kermes oaks, holm oaks, and gorse, more or less along the ridge, until we find the cliffs of the wall and the gullies to descend them.

It is difficult to find the right gully, since there is more than one, but the one we are looking for must coincide at the same time in the middle of the two torrents that descend to the barranc d'Ensoles, a tributary of the ribera Salada.

It is a gully with little vegetation, with some box, and a little difficult to descend because you have to scramble down. About ten metres from the head, in the middle of the gully, we will find it, and we must be very careful not to fall into it, through the upper mouth. It will take us about fifteen minutes on foot from the path.

Description

Morphology

It is a small pit formed by the water that flows through the gully which, at first, had the function of a sinkhole, but over time, it has been enlarging, and the rocks from the ceiling have begun to fall due to lack of support and have been gradually plugging it.

It has two mouths. The upper one is a little larger than the lower one. This chamber has a base of 6 x 9 m, full of rocks fallen from the ceiling, by 7 metres of height up to the upper mouth.

Speleothems

The eastern wall and the entrance passage are draped with lithogenic formations of great beauty and harmony, which reinforce, at the same time, the vault of the ceiling so that it does not collapse completely. There is a large bell-shaped flowstone on the south wall of the chamber, ideal for placing a nativity scene beneath it.

Progression

We will use the lower one to enter, because it is the easiest. There is a small one-metre drop, followed by a small ramp, and finally we will descend another drop to reach the chamber.

History

Discovered by Agustí Espuga on a day when he was going to hunt wild boar in a drive, and he had to pass through the gully to be able to get out of the enclosed wood. If one day you want to visit it, ask for information at the restaurant of cal Agustí, they will show it to you in more detail since it is quite difficult to find.
