Location

West of the mouth of the riera de Ribes (the natural boundary of the so-called Garraf massif). From Sitges, head towards the Club de Golf Terramar and follow parallel to the Platja de Santa Margarida as far as the Atlàntida discotheque and the platja de les Coves. Description

Morphology

From the western to the eastern end of the so-called Punta de les Coves are found the following cavities:

  • Coveta de la Platja de Rosés: a small erosion rock shelter excavated in sedimentary materials.
  • Cova Ensulsiada or Ensorrada: remains of an ancient cavern practically disappeared due to rockfalls that make it impenetrable.
  • Els Bufadors: two underwater conduits, with holes in the upper part that blow and whistle when the sea is rough.
  • Cova Llarga: see the entry for the Cova del Gegant – Llarga.
  • Cova del Gegant: see the entry for the Cova del Gegant – Llarga.
  • Cova dels Musclos: has a very wide mouth and a short passage of about 10 metres.
  • Cova Verda: see entry.
  • Coveta dels Còdols: near the Cova Verda, on a small beach full of pebbles; a conduit about 4 metres long; it had a small deposit that has now disappeared.
  • Cova de la Masia de les Coves or Cova Oriental: beneath the disappeared farmhouse; a small gallery about 5 metres long with an exit to the outside at the end among the rocks.

Progression

Els Bufadors are two underwater conduits where one can only enter by diving in calm sea.

History

Known since time immemorial. The academic and adopted son of Vilanova, Teodor Creus i Corominas, published in 1893 a collection of legends and traditions: “Set Contallas del Temps Vell”, in which appears a poem entitled: “Las Covas de Sitges” and which gathers a story full of legends, witches and giants that lived in these caves.

The first speleological mention is by Font i Sagué in his Catàleg (1897), where he makes a brief reference as: “Les Coves (Sitges): Són socavacions fetes per les ones entre dita població i Sant Pere de Ribes”. Later, Faura i Sans in his Recull (1909), adds the Forat de les Coves (upper entrance of the previous one); undoubtedly he refers to the pit mouth of the Cova del Gegant.

In 1956, members of the Agrupació Muntanyenca de Sitges begin the first excavations of the important Quaternary deposit of the caves, especially of the Cova del Gegant. Two years later, in 1958, members of the Museu V. Balaguer de Vilanova continue the work.

The scholar from Vilanova Antoni Ferrer catalogues all the cavities of the sector and gives a name to each of the small unnamed cavities.
