Small caves in Calafell, Baix Penedès: two nearby cavities, la Cova de la Graiera no. 1 and no. 2.

Characteristics

Location

Shortly before km 2 of the TV-2126 road that links the urban centres of Bellveí and Calafell, we will turn off onto the old stretch of road that branches off to the left. At this point we will leave the vehicle and continue on foot along the path to the left of the road; this main path, initially uphill, heads towards the East and after a stretch of 150 metres we will reach the balma de la Graiera. The caves are about 30 metres E of the balma and 12 metres higher.

Description

Morphology

A group of two small cavities excavated in the same level of strata and close to each other.

la Cova DE LA GRAIERA NO. 1: the largest of the group, it is structured in a chamber of habitable dimensions and a narrower gallery attached to the W end of the entrance porch. It has a length of 11 metres.

la Cova DE LA GRAIERA NO. 2: it is located barely 5 m SE of the neighbouring cave no. 1, suspended slightly in the same cliff and structured in a single stepped ascending gallery. It has a length of 3 metres and a drop of +1 metre.

History

They possibly formed part of the group of cavities cited by Joan Virella as “Baumes de la Griera”.

In August 2020 Jordi Navarro and Montse Mañosa (Centre Excursionista Castellar) located it and carried out the documentation work for inclusion in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (2023).
