Characteristics

Location

From km 13.5 on the road from Terrassa to Mura, you must go down along a path towards the Roure Escorçoner, as if heading to the avenc de la Canal de les Teixoneres, but you must follow the riera de les Arenes downstream towards the Sot de la Bota and follow the path that climbs to the coll Prunera. Once here, you must follow the ridge eastwards to reach the Morral d'en Bens, and from below it you must go around it on the south side to find a gully where the cave is located. From east to west there are: Cova Xica; Cova Bellot; Cova Bellot II. Approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

A portal 4 metres high by 0.50 metres wide allows us to enter via a short ascending ramp into the interior of the cavity, formed by a chamber that, though not very wide, is quite tall: 4 metres at its upper part. The width just exceeds one metre. At the end of the chamber, everything ends suddenly in a small dome of bedrock.

Speleothems

The ceiling is covered by some stalactites as well as parietal flowstone.

History

Domènec Bellot discovered the cave Bellot and the Cova Xica, and we have evidence of their exploration in 1966 by members of the GES – CMB (probably from its Terrassa delegation), and they include them in the catalogue of Sant Llorenç del Munt (1974); they call it Cova Ballot and without accompanying any survey.

In January 1986, Xavier Badiella and Albert Buil (SIS – CET) found between the two previous ones a small hole, which they did not explore until August 2000 and which they went on to name cova Bellot, and we believe that the one already known by this name they call Cova Bellot II. Since they have always been known this way, we maintain this criterion even though we think it is erroneous.
