Characteristics

Location

The cova Tosca is located on the left bank of the Siurana river, in Cornudella de Montsant.

From the village of Arbolí one must take the track that climbs to the hermitage of Sant Pau; shortly before reaching it there is another track on the left (closed) (Camí de Gallicant). One passes beside the font Voltada and continues towards the Mas de Salin (rural house). One continues onwards towards Gallicant; shortly before a ruined corral a maintained path branches off to the left and descends towards the barranc del Grau and crosses the Grau de Vincabrer. Once down, the path takes a NE direction and, at a certain point, we will find a crossroads with a signpost where we can read “La Tosca”. With a steep climb, and in a few minutes, it will lead us to the cova Tosca.

Description

Morphology

The cova Tosca has dimensions of 13 metres in length by 12 metres in height and a width of 40 metres.

Speleothems

The tufa deposit is about 18 metres in length by about 17 in width.

Hydrology

The water supply that has caused the accumulation of tufa comes from an exterior torrent that flows above the cliff.

Other details

Curious shelter partially closed by tufa.

History

Known since remote times. Vilaseca already mentions it in his work (1958) on the nearby Cova de Porta-Lloret.

Very well known by hikers who travel the area, it had not been the subject of a speleological work until the visit of members of the EC Gràcia and the GE Badalona (February 2017) who visit it and carry out a complete cataloguing task.
