Cova dels Voliacs

Cova dels Voliacs

Petita cova de 30 m. de recorregut al congost de Tresponts (Organyà, Alt Urgell)

Organyà • Alt Urgell30m6m

Small cave with a 30 m passage in the Tresponts gorge (Organyà, Alt Urgell), with an entrance modified with explosives and a single descending gallery.

Characteristics

Location

At km 14 of the C-14 road, between la Seu and Organyà, in the Tresponts gorge, there is a construction made of bricks. Above it, a tall rock with a needle shape can be made out. You must climb up behind the construction and alongside the walls until you find the cavity, about 30 metres above the road, somewhat elevated but easy to locate.

Description

Morphology

The cave entrance is 2.2 metres wide and 3.2 metres high and has been modified with explosives in order to facilitate access (two drill holes can be seen). It leads to a single descending gallery. At 11 metres we come across a 1 metre drop that leads to a small chamber. On the floor there is a 1 metre drop with no continuation. From the bottom of the small chamber, the outside light can be seen on the ceiling. By climbing up the sloping wall, one can reach the blocks that completely obstruct the exit. A rope tied to one of the blocks (from the outside) indicates that the exit would lead to a vertical wall where climbing is practised. Vertical extent: 6.2 m (-4.4; +1.8).

History

Known since time immemorial. In 1981, J. de la Vega identifies the cova del Pont Vell as a synonym of the cova dels Voliacs, a synonymy that is also recorded in the Inventari del Patrimoni Arqueològic de Catalunya, but the location it gives corresponds to the cova dels Voliacs and the description to the cova del Pont Vell, an error that is also recorded in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya of 2009. In reality these are two different cavities: the cova dels Voliacs (or cova dels Muriacs) and the cova del Pont Vell, explored by the SIE in 1970.

We had the location of the cova dels Voliacs (believing it was the cova del Pont Vell) and we quickly realised that they were different cavities.

Once the survey was done, we attempted, without success, to locate the cova del Pont Vell, which should be located about 200 metres before the cova de la Galeria del Pont Nou.

In the Inventari del Patrimoni Arqueològic de Catalunya (and also on the ICC map) two cavities appear: the forat de Tresponts (a cavity in an ascending direction that has been partially backfilled with rubble from the construction of the road) and the forat petit de Tresponts (a descending hole through which a person can enter) approximately at the place where the cova del Pont Vell should be. We suspect that when the road was remodelled, the two entrances of the cova del Pont Vell were partially covered, which would correspond to the two forats de Tresponts, but a new search on the ground will be needed to be able to confirm this.
