Cova del Rastre, about 80 m of passage at the Mola de Catí (el Port), known since time immemorial and cited by Faura (1909) and Ferraté (1918).

Characteristics

Location

At the SW end of the Mola de Catí.

From near the Cova Cambra a path sets out that skirts the whole crag of the Mola towards the west; one reaches a small col (to the right we would head towards the Avenc del Salany) and a few metres below the path is the Cova petita del Rastre. Continuing along the path for approximately one kilometre more we will find another path on the left of the one we are following, which descends diagonally over the inclined planes that form this slope of the Mola. This little track in a few metres more brings us to the Cova del Rastre.

Description

Morphology

Within a kind of trench two entrances open. The right-hand one, wider, communicates with a small chamber about 10 metres long by about 3 wide and ends in a raised step above the floor and full of concretions, especially flowstone.

The left-hand entrance is smaller and becomes a low gallery with a ceiling and with a slippery floor due to the presence of several flowstones. After a few metres it turns sharply to the right and gains height, to go, quickly, to emerge in a chamber of notable dimensions. To the right of this room and by a ramp between flowstones one reaches some small lower galleries.

Below the rise and to the right of the pool there is a small pit that leads to a series of short subvertical conduits plugged by lithogenesis.

Speleothems

All the lithogenic formations are, as in the neighbouring Cova Cambra, covered by a blackish masking.

Hydrology

Skirting a large pool one reaches the final stretch of the cave where a small gallery of short length develops.

Progression

Continuing straight on through the main chamber one finds a rise of about 3 metres that can be descended by a wooden ladder installed many years ago and that allows us to reach the lower zone of the main gallery; skirting a large pool one reaches the final stretch of the cave where a small gallery of short length develops.

Other details

A well-known cave of about 80 m of passage at the Mola de Catí (el Port).

History

Known since time immemorial, although it does not appear in the oldest speleological catalogues. Faura in his Recull (1909) and Ferraté (1918) record its existence although they only mention it by name.

The most complete data are provided by Lluís Porta i Massana, who with his companions visited it in mid-August 1934 during a long excursion through the massif of el Port.

There are those who also call it Forat del Rastre, although the name Cova del Rastre seems to be the majority.
