Hidden cave in the serra de Picancel (la Quar, Berguedà), in a wild gully on the S slope. Oval chamber 32 m by 20 m, very low, excavated in conglomerate. History linked to the maqui Marcel·lí Massana.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is hidden in a wild gully that cuts the S slope of the serra de Picancel. Specifically, it is in the westernmost of the so-called canals Males, a group of three nearby and almost parallel gullies that descend steeply from the so-called cingle de la Por.

From La Quar you must go to the monastery of la Portella (Sant Pere de la Portella), where the paved road ends. From here we can still continue on a track to a little beyond the farmhouse of Can Dou, where we will leave the car.

Description

Morphology

Basically, the cave is a more or less oval-shaped chamber with dimensions of 32 metres long by 20 maximum width. The surface area of the chamber can be estimated at about 480 square metres.

It is very low-ceilinged; on average we can say it is one metre high, which means the exploration must always be done crouching. It also has a strong slope towards the S, with a fairly regular inclination of the order of 25-30 degrees. The cave has two entrances. The upper and main one is 4 metres wide by 1 metre high, in the form of a compressed arch. The lower entrance, with a more awkward access, connects towards the S with a rock-sheltered surface.

Excavated in conglomerate, the whole ceiling coincides with a bedding plane where the conglomerate appears bare. The floor of the upper half of the cave is occupied by clay, very slippery when wet given the strong slope of the floor. In the lower half of the cave blocks dominate and the floor is dustier.

Speleothems

The ceiling coincides with a bedding plane where the conglomerate appears bare, except for some stretch with incipient concretion formation.

Progression

We will take the path that climbs to the collet de Puigseguí and from there continue along a path (yellow paint) that after some descents and ascents crosses the torrent resulting from the confluence of the three canals Males. Just after crossing, a small path starts on the right that goes up the torrent on the left (hydrographic right). You must be attentive, since the small path is quite lost; some sporadic blue paint marks help us.

History

The history of this cave is linked to the maqui Marcel·lí Massana, alias “Panxo”, a native of Berga and a good connoisseur of these mountains. This command of the terrain allowed him to carry out his guerrilla activity with impunity, since he knew every corner where he could hide and evade the surveillance and persecution to which he was subjected by the Guardia Civil.

Among the hiding places are two caves that bear his name, “Cova del Massana”. One is this one in la Quar. The other is in Guardiola de Berguedà. It seems that his main base of operations was on the S slope of Picancel, while the cave located in Guardiola he only used sporadically and for short stays, especially when he wanted to control the passage through the Llobregat valley as it was located at a strategic observation point.

Although the existence of the cave has been transmitted orally by the people of the region who knew of Marcel·lí Massana's activity, and although it is known to some hikers, never until the visit of members of the EC Barcelonès and the GE Badalona at the end of June 2018 had it been the object of attention by speleologists. In fact, this cave does not appear in any of the speleological catalogues published so far despite being a cave of relative importance.
