A 48 m long sea cave in Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant, with a large chamber, a zigzagging gallery and a lithogenic column.

Characteristics

Location

On the N-340 road, between the Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant nuclear power plant, and between kilometres 1,125 and 1,126, just in front of a vehicle scrapyard, we find on the sea side the access to the road that leads to the nudist beach of el Torn, where the parking area is. Before reaching it, however, we will find a closed curve to the left, where on the right a track leads out to a large esplanade where one can park. From this point we will cross the railway line and, instead of going down towards el Torn beach, we will continue to the right in a S direction along a path that runs between the railway line and the cliff, until reaching a small cove. The cave is about 60 metres to the S of this cove; it can be reached by swimming with the sea calm.

Description

Morphology

Through a wide mouth open in the cliff at sea level, we enter a chamber about 17x24 metres in diameter and 8.60 metres in maximum height. At the back of the chamber we find a small beach, whose dimensions vary depending on the state of the sea. At the NW end we find a small passage 6 metres long, while on the N wall of the chamber (on the right as we enter the cave) we find a zigzagging gallery 17.78 metres long with an average width of 4 metres and a height of 1.89 metres that decreases as we advance. At a point located near the start of the gallery we find a chimney 4.05 metres high.

Speleothems

We can also observe some interesting lithogenic processes, including a spectacular column right in the middle of this gallery.

History

Despite being quite well known in the area since time immemorial, this cavity does not appear in any of the catalogues published to date.

J. Ferraté (1918) mentions the name of some cavities on the coast of l'Hospitalet de l'Infant, but without providing further data or locations; we do not know whether any of those names correspond to this cavity.
