Characteristics

Location

The rock shelter is located in the Mata-redona area (Montsià). From Sant Carles de la Ràpita one must take the track that goes up the Solito ravine (path to Mata-redona) until reaching the Cocó del Jordi, where we can leave the car. At the second bend, above the Cocó, we leave the main path and climb directly up the steep trail that leads to the Pla de "la Rueda", old cultivation terraces of the Mas de Mata-redona, and continue up to the highest part. At the last terrace, one must lean out to the edge of the left cliff that hangs over the Fredes ravine. To the right and also above the same ravine open the Faixes Llargues.

Description

Morphology

It is a small rock shelter for shepherds. The walls of the shelter are still seen blackened by the smoke of old campfires.

Progression

Now one must scramble down a few metres amid a dense thicket of kermes oak and go on to gain a small gully that descends on the right, where a clearer little path helps us lose metres and reach the base of the left cliff of the little gully. A few metres away we find the mouth of the Cova del Floro.

Other details

Until not many years ago there was set up on one of the walls a kind of shelf made with sticks, possibly to store food or some tool out of the reach of animals. Now only the crossbeams that supported the structure remain. No survey is available.

History

Known since ancient times.
