Description
Morphology
The entrance, 2.5 metres by 1.5, gives access to a room 15 metres long and 5 wide oriented E-W. On the NE side a short gallery opens, situated a little higher, which leads to another room with an E-W orientation, 5 metres long and joined to a short gallery of 4 metres, from which another one runs towards the SE also 4 metres long. Through a raised passage one seems to reach another small room. The whole section of the cavity is structured following the dip of the bedding planes; although in the middle of the entrance room a joint can be seen crossing it perpendicularly.
Progression
At the moment no survey is available, while waiting for our friend Pallisé to have it drawn and pass it on.
Other details
A little further W, very close to the entrance, we find another cavity that has several entrances.
History
Joan Ferraté (1918) mentions it without giving any further reference. It is not until 1927 that Josep Iglésies gives specific references to the cavity. Later it is excavated by Dr. Salvador Vilaseca and we also have news of some visit by Dr. Francesc Español during his biospeleological research.
In the initial period (1960's) of the GIEM (Montblanc) they only went there a couple of times given the small development of the cavity, although recently they have returned to make a small sketch and try to locate fauna there. For a long time we had thought that the Cova del Drac and the Forat del Castell de la Formiga were the same cavity, but in a note by Dr. Español of November 1952 he cites them as two differentiated cavities.
Bio
When in November 1952 F. Español visits the cavity, accompanied by M. Acevedo, he also cites the Forat del Castell de la Formiga, from where he describes a new subspecies of the well-known Antrocharidius orcinus (Jeannel, 1910, at the Cova gran de la Febró). Español dedicates to his exploration companion the Antrocharidius orcinus ssp acevedoi. Currently it is Troglocharinus (Antrocharidius) orcinus. There only remains the doubt whether it is the same cavity or two different ones.
At the end of 2014, J. Pallisé captured some specimen of Troglorrhynchus gridelli bonretorni.
