Avenc Sense Nom

A pit about 20 m deep on the cingle de les Garrigues, at Vilaverd, with an access rock shelter, galleries and chambers; cited by Josep Iglésies in 1927.

Vilaverd • Conca de Barberà 40m 20m

A pit about 20 m deep on the cingle de les Garrigues, at Vilaverd, with an access rock shelter, galleries and chambers; cited by Josep Iglésies in 1927.

Characteristics

Location

On the left slope of the river Brugent and at the NE end of the cingles de les Garrigues, there is a small flat area on a col where the cova del Drac o del Castell de la Formiga is found. From this point and following the cingle towards the SW, one finds the rock outcrop of the cova de l'Aigua. Further to the SSW and among some rocks, there is a rock shelter 2 metres wide by 1 high; inside it is the small pit of the avenc.

Coordinates of very low precision and location to be reviewed.

In this same area of the cingle de les Garrigues the Cova del Colom o del Bestiar and the Cova de l'Àliga are cited. They seem to be some rock shelters that we do not have documented, and the doubt remains that one of them was what Iglésies calls Avenc Sense Nom.

Description

Morphology

A small hole opened at the bottom of the rock shelter leads to the ceiling of a gallery with openings that also lead to the upper part of a chamber 10 by 4 metres and 7 metres high. At its NE side begins a ramp that reaches a platform, which, through a hole, communicates with the upper gallery and, through a small pit of 3 metres, one reaches a chamber 10 by 4 metres that is connected at its base with the ceiling of a new gallery 5 by 1.5 metres and 4 high.

Other details

Like all the cavities of the area, its origin is due to the concavities originated by the accumulation of blocks from the collapse of part of the cingle.

We have no news of the existence of any survey of the cavity.

History

It is not until 1927 that Josep Iglésies gives the first and for the moment only references to the cavity.

For the moment all the data we have are those given in 1927 and we have no knowledge of any exploration that could update the record.
