Characteristics

Location

From km 8.15 of the BV-2122 road (between Torrelles de Foix and Pontons) a track leads to the Penyafort holiday house (former Molí de Baix). We follow this track for 850 metres to a very sharp bend where we leave the car. We must continue on foot along a small path that leaves from the left side of the road in a steep climb that soon brings us to the cavity.

Description

Morphology

The cavity opens to the outside through two entrances about 2 metres apart from each other. Entering through the right-hand one, the larger, we find a single rectilinear gallery with the floor completely occupied by large blocks that can easily be descended to the bottom. The bottom of the cave can already be seen from the entrance. The height is considerable (13 metres), with a constant width of about 2 metres. At elevation -4, beneath the blocks at the entrance, there is a small chamber.

History

It was certainly known for a very long time by the people of the area. The first record we have is the one provided by members of the SIE – CEA who explored it during Holy Week of 1972, although the survey had remained unpublished until now. Even then it was already called Cova del Bram.

Virella (1978) simply mentions it as Cova d'en Braun and later Aymamí (1985) continues to give it this name and adds the synonym Cova de Penyafort.

We really do not know whether its name derives from the cry of some animal or from that of a strong current of water (bram); what does not seem very likely is that it comes from some well-known person with the name of this household appliance brand (Braun).
