Cova de l'Endal

Cova d'uns 80 m. de recorregut prop de Sant Sadurní de Gallifa

Gallifa • Vallès Occidental80m5m

Cave of about 80 m of passage near Sant Sadurní de Gallifa, on the N slope of the hill where the hermitage stands.

Characteristics

Location

On the N slope of the hill where the hermitage of Sant Sadurní de Gallifa stands.

From Sant Feliu de Codines take the BP-1241 road and before reaching Gallifa, at km 11, there is a good place to park the car. Right in front a track starts heading North, later becoming a path, then turning back into a track, thus passing beside Mas la Roca as far as a bridge over the Riera de la Roca.

On one side of this bridge begins the Camí dels Feliuans path, which climbs with a few zigzags up the North-east face of the Mola until reaching the Collet de Pedra (from this point a track continues along which in about 900 metres one would reach the Collet de Sant Sadurní). About 150 metres before the Collet de Pedra you must leave the path (see photo, point X: 426971; Y: 4617722) and continue below it and through the middle of the forest with no path. You pass through a flat area, with black soil, that looks like an old charcoal kiln, and continuing onwards you reach the foot of the cliff where the vertical fissures can be seen in which, higher up, the cave entrances are located.

Description

Morphology

Structured on two parallel joints rigidly oriented N-S that form a single one in the N half. In the S stretch a series of breaks in the separating wall allow communication between both joints.

From the main entrance, somewhat complicated, the following should be noted: 1) A large fallen block, whose original position can be clearly seen in the ceiling; 2) Scattered blocks; 3) Rainwater drainage channel, which is the access fissure with evident signs of erosion on the walls.

At the S end the break affects both joints with an exit to the outside through a transverse joint that cuts the rock mass about 5 metres.

The 80-metre passage is an estimate based on the most modern survey since the authors do not specify it. It should also be noted that between both surveys the magnetic North varies 180º, the SIRE survey being the one with the correct North.

Hydrology

Rainwater drainage channel, which is the access fissure with evident signs of erosion on the walls.

History

Certainly known since remote times. The first news we have of a visit by speleologists is the one carried out by members of GES – CMB in April 1951. They returned in March 1963, which is when O. Andrés and J.Mª Torras surveyed and drew a plan of the cave on graph paper, which had remained unpublished until now.

In May 1976 members of SIRE – UEC Gràcia visited it and published an article with the survey of the cave that until now was the only one we knew of, even though the cave is well known to the hikers who go up to Sant Sadurní.
