Cova de l'Aigua del Pas Nou

A 27-metre-long cave at Pas Nou, Vilanova de Meià, with a large entrance and a gallery 8-10 metres wide.

Characteristics

Location

From Vilanova de Meià, access is via the Pas Nou to the Hostal Roig - Sant Salvador de Toló junction. At this point, leave the paved road and take the track on the right towards Sant Salvador de Toló. About five hundred metres along, a new track branches off almost perpendicularly to the right (Camí del Pelat). Take this track, which, through a forest, allows easy access to the Pelat. This is a track followed by a GR, perfectly signposted. After about 2.2 kilometres, you reach the foot of an electricity pylon. This pylon is the only one in this spot that does not have a red ball at the very top. The pylon is also identified by the number L- 151 written in the concrete of one of its bases. The car must be left here.

From this point, orient yourself towards the south and identify the other electricity pylons. Two are clearly visible. Head towards the third electricity pylon. You can continue on foot along the track; this, after several bends, leads to the third electricity pylon. Before reaching the pylon, on the right we find a trench that in a W direction leads to a bunker with two embrasures that is fairly well preserved. Standing in front of the bunker and looking in a W direction, you find the first cairn that indicates the descent path to the cova de l'Aigua.

Description

Morphology

The cave has a large entrance, narrow at one end and wide at the other. The access gives way to a gallery 8-10 metres wide that creates a broad vestibule. The cave has a total of 27 metres of passage, climbing progressively until reaching the final part.

Hydrology

In the final part there are some small pools that may be found full of water.

Progression

The descent path to the cave first turns towards the SW and then turns towards the NW. It is a steeply sloping path, well marked by a series of cairns that lead to the very entrance of the cave. The descent is made along a narrow path, well traced and well marked by the cairns. The path has only one point of a couple of metres, which is relatively very close to the drop that falls over the Pas Nou. If you have any misgivings about passing this point, you can move close to the cliff wall where there is a small passage, more overgrown with vegetation, but which offers more security.

History

The first exploration was carried out by the SAS of the Club Gimnàstic Barcelonès in 1969. It is said that during the civil war (1936-1938) the soldiers entrenched at this point accessed the cave to fetch water.
