Cova d'en Joan Petit

A 25 m long cave in the Serra de l'Obac, with a long ascending corridor of about 16 m and a 15 m joint.

Mura • Bages 25m

A 25 m long cave in the Serra de l'Obac, with a long ascending corridor of about 16 m and a 15 m joint.

Characteristics

Location

Take the same route as for the Cova dels Talps; when we leave the last track and climb up through the middle of the torrent's thalweg, we must climb up the right-hand side, following the cliff base, until we find the Cova d'en Joan Petit at the end of a long ascending corridor. It can help us orient ourselves to know that it is almost directly opposite the Cova dels Talps.

Description

Morphology

A long ascending corridor, about 16 metres long, with side walls 6 metres high, leads us to the cave entrance. The entrance is 3 metres high by one wide; these dimensions diminish as we enter, until we come to a narrow passage raised off the floor and covered by flowstone that makes progress difficult. The joint is 15 metres long and is interrupted in its final part by small rock bridges that make progress even more difficult.

Speleothems

The cave entrance is quite covered with limestone formations in a state of decalcification.

Hydrology

The narrow passage leads out into a fairly deep plunge pool (1 metre); once past this, very often full of water, we descend a step that places us in a fairly narrow joint where we can stand upright.

Progression

Progress through the narrow joint is eased by a small rounded widening of the floor that precedes an increasingly narrow continuation.

History

Possibly discovered and explored by speleologists from Sabadell around the early 1980s. There was no record of it until members of the SIS del CE Terrassa rediscovered it in early 1986.
