Characteristics

Location

The cave opens next to the bed of the ravine that separates the Avenc del Cim de l'Obaga del Pollo from the Avenc del Camí de Xàquera. Structurally it is formed by the same fault that forms the Avenc del Cim de l'Obaga del Pollo; in fact, the tips of both cavities are only 13 m apart.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, in a vertical position and 4.2 x 4.8 m (width x height), gives way to a wide chamber of 15.5 x 6.8 m with the ceiling at 4.8 m high. The E wall of the chamber is formed along the main joint; therefore, next to this wall we find a collapsed fracture that gives way to some pits. The S end of the aforementioned fracture also gives continuity to the cave after overcoming a narrowing. The S zone is formed by a narrow joint. The N zone of the fracture is collapsed and gives way to a wide 11 m pit. At its base we find a gallery 1.7 m wide. Towards the N we find a new 5.5 m pit that leaves us in a narrow little room where the cavity still continues through a narrow vertical passage that reaches 20.6 m deep.

Speleothems

Without descending to the bottom of the drop we access a level where the walls appear covered in concretions and which continues for about 10 m.

Progression

This S gallery begins ascending and then descends and overcomes an 8 m drop followed by another of 7 m that leaves us in a narrow zone that closes but where an appreciable air current is noticed. On its S side a narrow fracture emerges that ascends a series of narrow drops and reaches the entrance chamber again. This point is very close to the tip of the climbs in the Avenc del Cim de l'Obaga del Pollo.

History

The first exploration was carried out by members of the GES – CMB in June 1954, although they do not describe the innermost zone of the entrance gallery, of which we have a reference from the exploration by the SIE – CEA in 1983.

During the 2017-2018 campaign carried out by members of the UEC-Tortosa, SIET (Tarragona) and Espeleo Club Castelló it is reviewed and some conduits are discovered that make it gain depth. They name it Cova de Xàquera although its original name is that of Cova-avenc del Cim de l'Obaga del Pollo, which we keep as the main one and leave the other as a synonym. Although we know that the toponym 'cova-avenc' is not very orthodox and has been out of use for years.
