Characteristics

Location

Ponent de la Mola del Boix (Serra del Boix), in Tivenys (Baix Ebre).

Access can be gained from the TV-3022 road from El Perelló to Rasquera, and on reaching km. 7.2 a track (GR-192) branches off to the left towards the rock paintings; before reaching Mas de Vetetes, a now dirt track branches off to the right that follows the GR and shortly turns off again to the right towards Mas de Naqueres where we may come across a chain; if it is closed we will have to start walking along the track until reaching a col where a path branches off that follows the ridge in a N direction, towards the culminating summit of the massif (Xàquera or Creu de Santos), but before that it passes a doline with water at its bottom (Bassa del Boix) and shortly before reaching the summit of the Pollo, we find the pit clearly visible because it is covered with a grate in the middle of the path. The estimated approach time is 45 minutes from the chain on the track to the start of the path, and 30 minutes from the start of the path to the pit.

To access the cavity it is interesting to get in contact with the UEC de Tortosa, since there is the possibility that they open the chain at the start of the track that leads to the Coll de Xeta, where we will leave the vehicles.

Description

Morphology

The entrance of the cavity, covered with an unfixed iron grate, is very narrow and gives way to a 3.5 m drop, also narrow and quite limited, which leaves us in a fracture with a N-S orientation. Immediately we find a ramp with a lot of loose stone and a 26 m pit. At the base and in a northerly direction we will access a beautiful little chamber with formations (saleta de la columna). If on the contrary we continue in a southerly direction, we will find a new vertical of 6 m followed by another of 15 m. Thus we reach the base of the entrance pits where we can travel the fracture in both directions. These entrance pits constitute the first sector of the cavity.

Below the 15 m pit and in a southerly direction we find a small opening at ground level that gives way to the second sector of the cavity. In this sector narrow passages and the existence of many small plants predominate. The fracture that forms the cavity is full of clastic materials which makes progression more uncomfortable.

At a point in this chaos of blocks we can access a very concretion-covered small pit and a very beautiful little chamber, with a small lake. We continue descending different drops and overcoming various narrownesses, some of which have been cleared. Finally we reach the head of the pou de la butxaca (P-10) which leaves us in a wider room (sala del peluquero de Ben Laden) at the -100 m level. The room can also be accessed via the cat flap route avoiding descending the P-10.

To access the third sector of the cavity we will have to overcome the pas de glòria or the pas de la discòrdia, both are selective narrownesses. Once the narrowness is overcome we can take two routes. To follow the most direct route we descend a 10 m pit and then access the head of the pou Camelot (P-55). Halfway down this pit we can also access the other route. The pou Camelot, in the second part becomes very wide and its walls are highly decorated by beautiful flowstones. At the base we have a very beautiful room. From here we can climb a ramp that leads us to rooms with large blocks, or else continue through a narrow fissure by means of a handline that leaves us in a -9 m pit. At the base of the P-9 we are at the point of maximum depth of the cavity (-177.2 m). From here and in a southerly direction, we can travel the galeria Corri.

If situated below the pas de la glòria, we take the north route, we will find a descending handline followed by a 20 metre vertical, which leaves us in the great gallery of Xàquera. This is the widest zone of the pit. From the base of the pit: in a southerly direction we will connect with the pou Camelot at its halfway point; on the other hand, in a northerly direction we will descend a ramp with blocks. In the final part of the great gallery of Xàquera we can access a couple of tiny pits: the sumidero fangós pit (downclimbable) and the pouets de Cantero (P-9 + P-7).

Speleothems

The saleta de la columna contains formations. The pou Camelot, in the second part, has its walls highly decorated by beautiful flowstones.

Hydrology

The Bassa del Boix doline has water at its bottom. In the little chamber of the second sector there is a small lake.

Other details

Type: Pit. Depth of 180 metres.

History

Discovered and cleared by members of GIE – CE Gràcia around the year 1972 or 1973 after the first explorations at the avenc Solsona, calculating a depth of 62 metres. Around 1980 members of EC Gràcia make the first topographic survey that we know of. In 1983 La SIE del CEA carries out a new survey where they assign it -76 metres of depth.

We do not know the exact date on which Joan Tirón (UEC Tortosa) visited the cavity, enlarged the entrance zone and placed a grate at the entrance to prevent accidents.

In 2011, on a visit to the pit made by Cantero, Tomàs and Salvador of the UEC de Tortosa, Pep of the S.I.T. de Tarragona and Diego Mota of the ESPEMO, they observed that at the end of the pit, removing some blocks, the cavity continued.

During the years 2011 and 2012, in successive exploration visits and various clearings they reached the -177.2 m level.

On 22 and 23 December 2012 the new survey was carried out.

Again on a visit made on 2 February 2014, members of the UEC de Tortosa, cleared an extremely narrow passage and accessed a narrow diaclase that allowed them to descend to -180 metres of depth, making a sketch of the explored section.
