Characteristics

Location

West of the Mola del Boix (Serra del Boix). Access can be gained from the TV-3022 road from El Perelló to Rasquera, and shortly after km 7, on the left a track (GR-192) branches off, before reaching the Mas de Vetetes; on the right a track branches off that follows the GR and shortly afterwards turns off again to the right towards the Mas de Naqueres, and from there it climbs up towards the ridge of the Serra del Boix. At this point a path branches off that follows the ridge in a N direction, towards the culminating summit of the massif (Xàquera or Creu de Santos), but before that it passes a doline with water at its bottom (Bassa del Boix) and a little further on, in the middle of the path, is the avenc del Camí de Xàquera, and one reaches the pla de la Mola del Boix, where the path turns west and gently levels out towards a nearby ravine. We are to the E of the corrals del Moreno and the bassa de Solsona and at the head of a torrent that descends towards the so-called Racó Roig. Descending about 250 metres along the left bank and at the place where the walls close in, we find, very well hidden under a spur, the mouth of the pit.

Description

Morphology

The mouth of the cavity opens, structured on a fault orthogonal to the axis of the fold and with dimensions of 9 x 3 metres. A 5 metre pit follows, easily down-climbed, which leads us to a small chamber formed by a chaos of very well cemented blocks and which towards the NW presents a strong incline. Here the generating fault loses width at the same time as the debris wedged between the walls disappears, thus forming a vertical pit of 9.5 metres. We find the blocks again further down, and gaining height by opposition we reach a new widening. We are at the survey point, and thanks to a traverse-down-climb we gain a spacious ledge formed by a chaos of large blocks. Here a 22 metre pit is born, divided in two in the central zone by the closing of the fault and of notable extent following its plane. At the bottom of its base, obstructed by debris and sediments, we reach the point of maximum depth.

Speleothems

A new widening with a profusion of stalagmitic formations.

History

Within the many campaigns that the members of the GIE of the Club Excursionista de Gràcia carried out in the Cardó area during the 1960s and 1970s, they were informed by residents of Tivenys, although with scant references, of the existence of this cavity. Three outings were needed to be able to locate it, since the location site is difficult to find, which took place in December 1972 and the first exploration was carried out. It was not surveyed until almost four years later.
