A 14 m long cave in Sales de Llierca (Alta Garrotxa), with la Cova-1 and la Cova-2 on the Puig de Cofí.

Sales de Llierca • Garrotxa 14m

A 14 m long cave in Sales de Llierca (Alta Garrotxa), with la Cova-1 and la Cova-2 on the Puig de Cofí.

Characteristics

Location

1200 m NE of Sadernes, north of the summit of Puig de Cofí (on some maps written “Cufí”), 603 m high.

To get there, take the track (asphalted at the beginning) that leaves on the right of the road leading to Sadernes, about 200 m before reaching it. After about 3 km along it, the track reaches a col, already close to the ruined houses of Cofí. About 160 m before reaching the col, we must watch out for a faint path that leaves on the left side, uphill. After climbing about 10 m of elevation gain we will find la Cova-1 at the foot of a small cliff.

La Cova-2 is 32 m away from la Cova-1, towards the south and almost at the same elevation.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, in the shape of a Gothic arch, is 1.8 m wide by 2.3 m high. It hangs a couple of metres up, which forces us to climb up to access the gallery. This is straight, with a flat floor, and gradually decreases in size as we go deeper.

Progression

To access the gallery it is necessary to climb up, since the entrance hangs a couple of metres up.

History

Speleologically these two caves were made known by members of the Centre Excursionista d’Olot, who had explored them on 9-4-1979, with the names 121 and 122, taking these names from an order in the listing of the speleological catalogue of the area that was carried out and remained pending publication (unpublished) in the magazine Espeleòleg of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya. In 1980 the records are published, except the survey of 122, in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya, vol. 2.

Thus these place names have not been very well known in the hiking world and when referred to they have been cited as caves of Cofí and very possibly also as caves of the torrent de Llorers.
