Cavorca de Falgars

Avenc de 40 m. de desnivell a la Vall d'en Bas (la Garrotxa)

Vall d'en Bas, La • Garrotxa251m40m

A 40 m deep pit in the Vall d'en Bas (la Garrotxa), explored and surveyed by the Grup d'Espeleologia de Badalona between May 1994 and January 1995.

Characteristics

Location

The pit is located in the Vall d'en Bas (la Garrotxa).

One access route leaves the C-153 road between Cantonigrós and the Coll de Condreu, at kilometre 34, at the start of a sharp right-hand bend; from the left a paved track leaves, the camí del Coll. Once past the Coll, the paved track continues along the camí de Falgars to the Devesa until reaching Falgars d'en Bas. A little further on, just past the turn-off for the Freixedella, cars must be left because there is a fence blocking the way, with signs indicating private property and no entry even for bicycles. Although it says no entry, it is a GR and a very narrow passage has been left for those on foot (with a backpack on your back you cannot get through); follow the track that descends and the hole is in the ditch on the right-hand side.

Another way to reach it is from shortly before arriving at the Hostalets d'en Bas, along the C-153 road coming from Rupit and the coll de Condreu (Osona): a partly cemented track leaves, called de la Coromina, which climbs up to Falgars d'en Bas; this is a private track with restricted access. Once the track reaches the foot of the cliff (Cingles de Rocafeliu) and before a sharp left-hand bend, the entrance to the cavity is found on the left-hand side of the track, concealed by vegetation.

Description

Morphology

The entrance mouth of the cavity is accidental in nature, since everything suggests that it was opened up with the widening of the concrete track that climbs to Falgars d'en Bas.

The entrance gallery, 2 to 3 metres wide, has two small chimneys in its ceiling. A pit of 8.5 metres divided into two drops takes us to 15 metres of depth. At this point we find an elongated chamber with a NE-SW direction, its floor occupied by clay sediments and a chaos of blocks. Below there is a small network of galleries structured along NE-SW and N-S joints, down which one descends to the -32 level. It can be accessed from different points on the lower side of the chamber.

If we continue along the main gallery in a NE direction, we can observe some lithogenic processes on tilted blocks. A few metres before the end of the gallery, below the blocks a drop opens up through which we reach a lower ledge with a very decomposed ceiling. At this point a pit of 10 metres and two small drops, all of them structured along an N-S joint, take us to the -38 level. A few metres further on there is a very narrow passage with an air current.

Speleothems

Other details

The pit has 40 m of depth.

The explorers already detected visits through hammer action on part of its mineralisations. The year in which the track was made and the possible appearance of the pit are unknown.
