Santa Pau • Garrotxa 11m

A large rock shelter in Santa Pau (Garrotxa), 26 m wide and 11 m deep, in a shady corner of the forest.

Characteristics

Location

About 3 km north of the village of Santa Pau and some 600 m west of the church and former monastery of Sant Julià del Mont. The rock shelter lies about 200 m in a straight line from the cova dels Encantats. Despite the proximity of both cavities, they are in different municipal areas, since the cova dels Encantats is in that of Sant Joan les Fonts.

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter opens onto a shady corner within the forest, right beside the torrent. It is 26 m wide by a maximum depth of 11 m. The ceiling is rather low; over much of the rock shelter one must move along crouching, especially in the southern half. The floor is clayey and with a lot of moss, which brings much greenery to the spot.

Speleothems

There is some corner with old concretions, as well as some gours that during the visit, in the height of August, were found dry but that probably hold water in rainy periods.

History

Known by local people and by some local hikers. Speleologically unpublished, it does not appear in any speleological catalogue.

In the latest edition of the Editorial Alpina map 'Garrotxa' (2024-2025) the place name 'Bauma de la Font dels Monjos' appears labelled, but in the older editions that we have available the place name does not appear labelled.

Also known by the name bauma de la Font dels Monjos.

The reference to the 'monks' is due to its proximity to the former monastery of Sant Julià del Mont and to the chapels of Sant Abdó and Sant Senén. The path that links these religious buildings is known by the name 'camí dels Monjos', which passes by the coll de Boixedes.
