Montagut i Oix • Garrotxa 33m

Spectacular rock shelter in the Alta Garrotxa, known since ancient times, with an entrance 22 m by 14 m and a passage of 33 m.

Characteristics

Location

From Oix we will set off in the direction of Beget to find the track that follows the Oix stream towards the Hormoier valley. We will follow it until just after crossing the pont Trencat, where a path comes out on the right that should lead us to the Mare de Déu d'Escales.

To get there we have two routes: what we might call the “normal” one, which crosses the Escales stream by the “Agafa’t de l'asa” footbridge, and the one that follows the course of the stream.

If we take the second, we will pass in front of the tuta d'Escales, which is just to the right of the path (coordinates 463796 – 4681656 – 348), and further on we will cross the stream at a ford (if it is in flood, we will have to get our feet wet).

On reaching the Mare de Déu d’Escales, we will continue along the ascending path which, with a few bends, brings us to the house of the Maranyó and, from there, we will continue in a steep climb until we reach the coll de la Bassa, one of the few grassy flats in these parts (good panoramas!!).

Shortly after the col, the path begins to descend in zigzags over stony ground. We will have to leave it just at a marked left-hand bend (a pile of stones indicates the spot). The rock shelter is only 20 m from the bend, but there is still an obstacle to overcome: a scramble which – although not complicated – requires some care as it is done above a drop. The remains of a dry-stone wall indicate that there was once a small path here, now collapsed.

All in all, a good walk of between 2 and 3 hours.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, spectacular, 22 m wide by 14 m high, gives access to a chamber with a more or less trapezoidal floor plan and 22 m deep. The section diminishes as we go in. At the back, the cavity continues to the right until reaching the terminal little chamber, which allows us to add a passage of eleven metres more (total, 33 m).

Hydrology

On the back wall there is a cistern – rather a small pool protected by some stone walls – that collects the water from the meagre drips and trickles from the wall that occur after the rains.

History

Known since ancient times. It is said that its name comes from a liberal soldier (a bugler to be more precise) who died in this cavity after a clash with the Carlist forces. It seems more like a legend than a verified fact.

Members of the SIE-CEA locate it in July 1970, but they give no data. In the 1973 edition of the Garrotxa map by Editorial Alpina it is mentioned but also without data, as in later speleological catalogues.

It is not until July 2019 that Ferran Cardona (ECM Barcelonès) visits it and carries out careful cataloguing work.
