Characteristics

Location

Taking la Baumassa as our reference point, we will take an ascending path that starts just from its right-hand side. Shortly afterwards we will come to a flat path that passes just above la Baumassa. Once here, we will have to go into the forest uphill, with no path and among boxwood, following a kind of torrent back up until we find the bauma de la Xuriguera. From la Baumassa to la Xuriguera, it is approximately 10 minutes.

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter itself is small, about 14 m wide, although the eastern part ends very imprecisely. The western end is the most habitable, where we find a stone hut, currently without a roof. The maximum depth of the shelter is 4.5 m.

Hydrology

To the east of the rock shelter there is a flow of tufa down which the water of the torrent runs when it rains. We find small holes in the tufa.

Other details

Around the rock shelter we find stone walls that are not very high, some to make a kind of enclosure and others in the manner of a wall of old terraces. We also find anthropogenic remains, such as pottery fragments, iron plates, rusty buckets, etc.

History

Known since time immemorial. The last permanent inhabitant was Josep Torroella Fajula (known as l'oncle Pepet or Pepet de Castellpalom), who left the bauma de la Xuriguera in 1969. Josep Torroella was a charcoal burner and had been born in 1901, dying in Sant Quirze a few days after leaving the rock shelter. His life in the rock shelter was quite simple; his diet was limited to a wineskin of wine, fruit (basically apples), bacon, beans and little else. This rock shelter was not a permanent dwelling, but he alternated it with the baumes de Can Llagosta and de l'Argelager.
