Sant Feliu de Codines • Vallès Oriental 10m

A large and well-known rock shelter in Sant Feliu de Codines, in the Vallès Oriental, known as Balma d'en Xec, with millstones and a dry-stone refuge.

Characteristics

Location

It opens on the left bank of the Riera de Vallbona, at the point where it meets the small stream of the Sot dels Castellans.

Leaving Sant Feliu de Codines on the C-59 road towards Castellterçol, at km 22.5 a dirt track branches off to the right, just at the Cim d'Àligues. Following it for about 600 metres, and just after crossing the small bridge over the Riera de Vallbona, a narrow path climbs up which we must follow for about 200 metres and which leads us directly to the rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

Rock shelter 22 metres wide, 10 metres deep and with a ceiling some 2 metres high, formed within marly strata overlain by another stratum of conglomerates about 5 metres thick that constitutes the flat, firm and safe roof of the rock shelter. It is possible that its depth has been increased by picking away or removing the blocks of the back wall over the years.

Speleothems

The rock shelter lies just below a torrent and in the rainy season the water falls in a cascade just above its western end, leaving a good representation of travertine concretion.

Although there is a certain degree of humidity, there are practically no drips from the ceiling, at most a few very localised and unimportant ones, except for one point beneath which a small pillar and a channel have been built in masonry, collecting and conducting the water to an irrigation pool. This whole ensemble is entirely covered with microgours containing oolites and small pisoliths.

Hydrology

The rock shelter lies just below a torrent and in the rainy season the water falls in a cascade just above its western end. Although there is a certain degree of humidity, there are practically no drips from the ceiling, at most a few very localised and unimportant ones, except for one point beneath which a small pillar and a channel have been built in masonry, collecting and conducting the water to an irrigation pool.

Other details

Inside the rock shelter there are two millstones. No one has been able to explain their presence.

At present the western end has been used by farmers as a hut, raising dry-stone walls to delimit a large room serving as a refuge and for storing farming tools and other materials.

History

Cited in old catalogues (Font i Sagué; Faura i Sans).

La Bassella is the place name of the site where the rock shelter is found, and Xec corresponds to the name of a house in Sant Feliu: Can Xec, which appears to derive from Francesc. The surname of the people of the house is Mumbrú. It is cited from the year 1093 literally as Espluga de la Bassela, although today it is better known as Balma d'en Xec.

On 23 September 2011 it was the object of a visit within the events of the European Heritage Days.
