Description
Morphology
We find two entrance mouths; the upper one, 0.65X0.68 metres, has a shaft of 4.90 metres, while the lower one, with dimensions of 1.28X1.25 metres, presents a drop of -1.70 metres. Entering by the lower mouth and once the drop has been overcome, we find another of -1.16 metres, coming upon a gallery of N-S orientation that is quite roomy and descends in a ramp. At the start of the gallery, on the left, there is a shaft of -2 metres that is extremely narrow and has not been descended. Straight away we find an ascending chimney that is easy to climb, through which 5.80 metres can be progressed. Traces of dry-stone walls and areas of levelling of the floor are observed, from the human use of the cavity. On the right, overcoming a drop of +2.80 metres, an ascending gallery sets off in a W direction, some 3 metres in diameter, which ends after 15 metres of passage. On the left-hand side we find two small shafts; the first communicates with the lower gallery, while the second has not been explored due to the instability of the blocks. The main gallery ends abruptly, but allows us to continue descending on the left to a lower level. After a drop of 2.20 metres, a few metres before there is a small shaft that communicates with a lower gallery. After the drop, if we go towards the S, we find two more small chambers, and if we descend in a N direction, we find a gallery that continues towards the NE for some 10 metres more. This gallery links up with the small shaft of the main gallery. The end of the cavity (point C) is not clear, since it is a narrow ascending passage, with very loose blocks that make one give up continuing.
History
The history of “el Gouffre de la Sorcière”, that is, “the pit of the Witch”, begins in 1964. It all starts with the campaign carried out during the month of August of that year in the serra del Cadí, by the Spéléo-club de Saint Pons. They set up camp in the valley of la Vansa and during the first three days they locate 17 cavities (?), one of them the Gouffre de la Sorcière, on which they place all their expectations. After two entries on the 15th and 16th, they descend to -207 metres and sound a new shaft of -64 metres, withdrawing for lack of material. On the 18th a great storm falls on them, and when they return to the cavity on the 20th they find that it has collapsed at -30 metres, making passage impossible. From this moment and for a few years the serra del Cadí becomes a point of search by various clubs from Catalonia, all seeking the Sorcière but without any result. In June 1965 the SIRE-UEC of Igualada moves to Montant de Tost where they learn of the existence of some cavities; always accompanied by local people, they explore a cavity that is located higher up than coll d'Arnat, and which according to what they have been told was visited by some Frenchmen in 1964; in fact inside they find inscriptions in French. Not knowing the name that the French gave to the cavity, they come to call it avenc dels Francesos. In 1969, taking advantage of the return journey from the 5th Congrès Internacional d'Espeleologia held in Stuttgart, Oleguer Escolà passes through Agde (France) where Gabriel Rodriguez lives, who took part in the exploration of the Sorcière. He did not remember anything, nor even place the cavity with the map in front of him, except that he remembered that they were accompanied to the cavity by a woman who was mute or mad or perhaps a witch, hence the name the French gave it. Having reached this point of absurdities, members of the GES and of the ERE reach the conclusion that it would be more profitable to seek mute women than pits. En Chavarria and the GES began a methodical tour through the villages of the Cerdanya, Puigcerdà, Alp, Urús, Bellver, and they tired before reaching la Seu d'Urgell. Another time they began by Gisclareny and Gósol, while the ERE began by Gósol, Josa, Cornellana and they were already informed that at coll d'Arnat there was a kind of mute woman. These headed for the house and managed to get the mute woman to accompany them as far as the cavity, which turned out to be the Baborell de Montsec, and moreover they learned that this was the only cavity in which the mute woman accompanied the French. In June 2007 it is visited and surveyed again by members of the GE Badalona, updating the record of the cavity.
