A 50-metre-deep cavity in Alòs de Balaguer, discovered by GIRES in 1996.

Characteristics

Location

About 500 metres before reaching Alòs de Balaguer, a sign at a right-hand turnoff points to the Masia. Follow this paved track for a few kilometres to a large ruined farmhouse on the right of the track. In front of the farmhouse there are some cultivated fields, which are crossed on the right-hand side; at the end of the field there is a track that is followed for 200 metres from the farmhouse to a junction. Continue to the left for 40 metres to a broken box (it had been a beehive). From here follow a faint path in a SW direction for 300 metres, where there is a sizeable cairn just before a small cliff (ED50 coordinates X:332829; Y:4644295). From here continue in direction S10E following several sizeable cairns for 150 metres, where the cavity is found in a small depression in the terrain.

Description

Morphology

The entrance gives access to a low passage where after a couple of metres we can already stand upright. Immediately afterwards there is a step that leads to a narrow passage that gives access to a shaft of about 4 metres; at its base one reaches a joint that descends until reaching the head of the final shaft of about 30 metres. The base is blocked by sediments, clastic products and mud. Except for the entrance gallery, which is 1.50 metres wide, the rest of the cavity has a width ranging between 0.20 and 0.60 metres.
