Location

From the house of the Puig de la Balma one must go up to the high-voltage tower located to the NW of the house. Here there is a wide path heading W and shortly after take a fork to the left, in a S direction, which climbs towards elevation 675 (the Puig). Once at the top (another fork leading to a high-voltage tower must be left aside) the path turns westwards and very soon begins to descend. At this point, about 30 metres to the right of the path and among holm oaks, is the entrance of the pit.

There may be some other more direct route, but not advisable because of the vegetation covering all the surroundings.

Description

Morphology

The entrance is nearly rectangular, 2.5 by 0.75 metres, which gives access to a single small shaft of 6.5 metres of drop. At its bottom a nearly circular small chamber is formed, 4.5 by 4 metres and a height of 1.3 metres.

Other details

The entire lower sector of the cavity is excavated in the reddish sandstones.

History

Known forever by the people of the Puig de la Balma, who simply call it 'l'Avenc'. We do not know who and when carried out the first exploration. The oldest news we have record of is that of a visit by members of the GES – CMB in July 1960.
