Description

Morphology

It is a large building 5 levels high by 6 metres maximum depth, raised beneath a rock shelter. The walls of this Mas are nestled and hung on the rugged ledges of a cliff, taking advantage of the natural cornices. The house is quite irregular in every sense: in height, width and depth. Noteworthy is the defensive and fortified character that this construction would previously have had, an aspect that can be deduced from the presence of an arrow slit touching the roof of the rock, from where the entire access path to the house can be watched. In the most inaccessible part of the cliff there is a room known by the name of the “prison”. At the foot of the path there is another rock shelter with a dry-stone wall. The most archaic sector is completed by some arcades of a medieval character.

Other details

The oldest part could be considered of pre-Romanesque period, but additions have been made to it over the centuries.

History

The settlement of the Mas del Puig de la Balma according to the archive of the house itself dates from the year 1149, however, we do not doubt that the origin of the Mas is earlier, and coincides with that of the other early medieval farmhouses of the Obac, installed to protect themselves from the Saracen armies that invaded the country in the 8th-9th centuries.

Next to the Mas (to the left of it) a new house was later built with a Romanesque chapel under the dedication of Santa Margarida.
