Avenc dels Pinyerets de Baix

Avenc dels Pinyerets de Baix

Petit avenc de 15 m. de fondària vora Aiguaviva del Montmell

Montmell, El • Baix Penedès45m15m

Small pit 15 m deep near Aiguaviva del Montmell, with two continuations, an important lithogenic process and cave-dwelling beetles.

Characteristics

Location

It is located in Aiguaviva. From the square where the restaurant el Celler is, we will head to the farmhouse of Cal Boques; after covering 365 metres we will follow the track on the left that turns 180º and continues uphill; after covering 290 metres we will enter the wood on the right of the track and at 10 metres we will find the mouth of the cavity at the foot of a pine tree.

About fifty metres further E of this pit and next to the track there is a small cavity with no apparent continuation, which has usually been confused with the avenc dels Pinyerets de Baix.

Description

Morphology

Small pit 15 m deep. Through a very narrow mouth and after overcoming a small step of little more than 1 metres in depth, one reaches two possible continuations.

Following the direction of the entrance joint, some blocks embedded in the centre of the gallery must be overcome. From here the gallery narrows until after overcoming a crawl that widens again to, within a few metres, remain closed.

Just below the entrance mouth a gallery begins on a steep slope that quickly gains depth and among a good number of blocks one reaches the point of maximum depth. Here there is a muddy crawl that gives way to a small chamber with an inclined ceiling in which one can climb up a ramp and reach two small chambers.

Speleothems

In the two small chambers an important lithogenic process can be observed.

Progression

History

It seems that the first exploration was carried out by Dr. Francesc Español in August 1934, in one of the many campaigns that he dedicated to the collection of cave fauna in the Tarragona regions.
