Characteristics

Location

From Ulldecona we head to Tortosa on the T-331 road; on reaching kilometre 2.8 we turn right and follow the track straight for 2.6 kilometres, passing over the railway and the motorway. At the end of the track the vehicle can be parked and a climbing path followed for 190 metres, which will lead us to the Iberian settlement of la Ferradura-els Castellets. From the S side of the settlement a ridge path starts; we follow it for about 25 metres and turn right for about 10 metres, on the slope facing Ulldecona, where we will find the cavity.

Description

Morphology

The whole cavity is a narrow and deep fissure that allows descent, with great difficulty, to 52 metres depth. The entrance, of small dimensions, gives rise to a first small pit of 3 metres and at its base a ramp begins that leads into a new vertical drop of 17 metres. A narrow and irregular gallery follows that reaches a new pit, very irregular and about 18 metres of drop. At its bottom and by a steep ramp one reaches the point of maximum depth where the fissure becomes impenetrable.

History

The first news we know of this pit is that provided by members of the Grup Espeleològic d'Ulldecona who must have explored it around the mid-1960s. During 1980-83, the SIE del CEA carried out different exploration trips in the Montsià – Godall area, among them the Avenc dels Castellets was explored and surveyed to about 40 metres depth, being unable to overcome the narrowness of the last section of the cavity.
