A group of 5 or 6 shelters and small caves of little speleological interest in the Montsià (Ulldecona), used to shelter livestock and as a refuge for a hermit.

Characteristics

Location

In the Montsià (Ulldecona). To the E of Ulldecona, on a roundabout of the T-331, a track sets off that within a few metres passes by the bassa de Montsià and continues until it passes over the AP-7; you must always keep straight on until you find, on the right, the turn-off that leads to the Mas de Fabra and continues to the Mas de Mulet. By road we follow the ravine on a gentle climb, among olive groves, heading SW. The track ends and becomes a path that climbs towards the coll del Rajolar. On the left we have the ridge that runs from the Ferradura to the Pedreres and the Cogula. On the left a path leaves us in front of the Caseta del Roig del Senellà, a typical Montsià construction, with a barrel-vaulted roof. At the fork we turn left to head towards the moleta del Rajolar, which we will follow along its ridge, now facing east. Almost at the highest point of the moleta, we leave the main path and take a narrow trail on the right to make our way to the upper part of the cliff where the caves are.

Description

Morphology

A group of 5 or 6 shelters and small caves of little speleological interest. No survey of these cavities is available, so the speleometric data are random.

Progression

We look for an obvious rock descent on the left-hand side of the cliff that will allow us to descend to the base of the wall and follow it, always with the cliff on our right. We will soon see the different entrances of the coves de Bartomeu.

Other details

Some of these small caves have been used to shelter livestock and in recent times it has served as a refuge for some “postmodern” hermit, who has left his mark in the form of an abandoned bed and the rest of the pots, bottles and cans.

History

Known since ancient times.
