A 16 m deep fissure at els Guiamets (Priorat), explored by the SIEP on 17 July 1983.

Characteristics

Location

Driving along the N-420 road from Falset to Móra la Nova and just past the turn-off to el Masroig, continue for a couple more kilometres and at around km 835.2 you will see, on the right, a quarry (Pedrera d'en Nicolau) where we will leave the car. To its right a path continues climbing towards the crag and follows the ridge leading to the nearby hill of la Tosseta (305 m). About 60 metres from the quarry and about 2 metres from the edge of the crag is the entrance to the cavity. Approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

The entrance (1.5 x 0.5 m) leads into a pit 4 metres deep. At its bottom there are two possible continuations: towards the west a short descending gallery begins and ends after 3 metres; in the opposite direction a ramp begins that gradually becomes steeper until reaching a pit of 5 metres where the deepest point is reached (-16.5 m). Shortly before reaching the end, a narrow gallery turns back until it connects with the base of the 5-metre pit. The whole cavity is set in a collapse fissure parallel to the crag.

Progression

Above the entrance of the pit one can advance by opposition along the joint and reach the continuation of the ramp for about 12 metres more until the fissure becomes impassable.

History

The cavity was unpublished until members of the SIEP explored it on 17 July 1983 based on information received from some people from the village of el Masroig who already knew it as Avenc del Xiprer. At first they placed it in the municipality of el Masroig, but once located on the map it can be seen that it belongs to els Guiamets, probably within the grounds of the nearby Mas d'en Xiprer.
