A pit 39 metres deep with 417 metres of passage in the Montsant, at Ulldemolins.

Characteristics

Location

From Ulldemolins you must go to the chapel of Sant Antoni, from where a path leads down to the Cadolles Fondes towards Sant Bertomeu; you must take the turn-off which, passing through the Tres Jurats, climbs up to the Pins Carrassers. Halfway up, a metal sign indicates a diversion: you must leave the main path and take the one on the right, which once you reach a col becomes less obvious; following more or less the same height and after passing two more ridges, you reach a small depression where the entrance of the cavity is located among the vegetation and about 20 metres below the ridge.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, 0.4x0.7 metres, gives way to a passage of reduced dimensions which, after a step, leads to a first chamber 7x7 metres with an irregular ceiling. A crawlway situated in the N side of the chamber allows access to the main gallery, about 30 metres long and with a width that oscillates between 6 and 10 metres; the low ceiling in the first third of the gallery gains height after a step, reaching up to 6 metres. The main gallery comes into contact with two orthogonal joints, one situated halfway along the gallery and reached through a narrow passage between blocks; once past this and after overcoming several steps, both descending and ascending, you reach a vertical narrowness that leads to the point of maximum depth of the cavity. The other is found at the W end of the chamber and communicates with the most complex part of the cavity, made up of a network of fissures with a preferential NE-SW and NW-SE direction, often interconnected with each other at different levels.

History

Explored by the GES of the CMT in June 1985, who were accompanied by some acquaintances who informed them about some cavities in the area, which they visited sporadically between the years 1982 and 1985.

The GELL explored and surveyed it again around 1997, but probably due to ignorance of the previous exploration, they overlooked the entire network of fissures in the W sector.
