Location

From Mont-ral, we will head W and take the camí de la Foradada. On reaching the Serrat de l'Avenc or dels Avencs, to the right of the path we will find the Avenc de l'Os. We will follow the path for about a hundred metres and leave it, heading N towards the crag. After a few metres we find a kind of natural trench that must be jumped; on the other side we find a depression where the pit opens. It is located 128 metres W of the avenc de l'Os, in the middle of a fairly dense forest.

Description

Morphology

A small entrance gives access to a ramp with a 40º incline, followed by a small shaft of 6.5 metres that places us at the upper part of a 55º ramp, totally occupied by blocks, which reaches -23 metres with respect to the upper lip of the entrance. Once again at the head of the last ramp, at the base of the small shaft and on its right side, we find another route which, by means of two steps, reaches the maximum depth of -28.7 metres.

History

Iglésies and Santasusagna in their guide to the Muntanyes de Prades (1930) and in the speleology chapter, say textually: El del Teix és, com el de la Febró, una colossal esquetxa descoberta, envaïda per la vegetació, on creix un teix grandiós; deu tenir 100 m. de llarg, per 10 d'ample i 50 de profunditat. Un dels forats explorats del serret dels Avencs comença en forma de cova i continua en esquerda fins a una probable profunditat de 50 metres. It seems they refer to one of the large collapses in the area and, regarding the cavity they mention, it could be what we know today as avenc del Teix but they could also be referring to the one catalogued as avenc de l'Espanyol, in the same area.

The most specific news of this cavity is given to us by members of the GGG who speak of an exploration in November 1968 and of the survey carried out on 6-1-1970.
